Kaal Bhairav Jayanti 2020: Kalabhairav Jayanti is a Hindu festival dedicated to Lord Kaal Bhairav, the fearsome form of Lord Shiva. The festival celebrates the birth anniversary of Kala Bhairav, the Hindu God of Time. Kalabhairav Jayanti is observed on the Ashtami Tithi, Krishna Paksha in the Hindu month of Margashirsha (as per Purnimant calendar) and Kartik (as per Amavasyant calendar).

As per the Gregorian calendar, this date corresponds to the months of mid-November to mid-December. This day is considered to be more auspicious when it falls on a Tuesday or Sunday as these days are dedicated to Lord Kala Bhairav.

Kalabhairav Jayanti also known as 'Mahakaal Bhairavashtami' or 'Kala Bhairav Ashtami.'
On this day special rituals are held in Lord Kala Bhairav's temples all across India. People visit the temples in the evening and participate in the 'Shodashopachar Puja'.

Significance
Like every other Hindu festival on this day also devotees get up early and take a ritualistic bath to perform special pujas. On this day some devotees worship Lord Kala Bhairav along with Shiva and Parvati with fruits, flowers, and sweets.

Some even keep strict fasting and keep vigil all night and narrate stories of Lord Kala Bhairav and Lord Shiva. They even chant the mantras dedicated to Bhairav and perform the 'aarti' at midnight with traditional musical instruments. After the completion of puja, they also recite the Kalabhairav Katha.
As Lord Kala Bhairav rides on a dog, in some regions dogs are also fed with milk and sweets on this day. Worshipping Lord Kala Bhairav on this day bestows good health and success.

Bhairava is derived from the word Bhiru (meaning - fear). This avatar of Mahadev is also known as Dandapani (meaning - the one who punishes). The legend associated with the Kaal Bhairav form imparts an essential life lesson. According to the story, Brahma grew arrogant and started taking pride in being the creator of the Universe. Kaal Bhairav severed one of Brahma's five heads with his Trishul (trident) to punish him. This was done to remind Brahma that pride, ego and arrogance lead to one's downfall. Apart from losing one of his heads, Brahma also became a recipient of Shiva's curse that said that no devotee would worship him. Therefore, because of this curse, there are only a handful of temples dedicated to Lord Brahma.

It is said that Kaal Bhairav appeared with four hands and with teeth protruding outward. He held a sword (talwar) or a noose (pasa) or a snake (sarp) in one of the right hands and a skull (kapal) in the other. He held a damru (drum) and a trident (trishul) in the two left hands. This form of Mahadev is scantily dressed as is accompanied by a dog, his mount.
